"Funk is makin somthin outta nuthin" William "Bootsy" Collins These images of solar systems are made from photographs of the body: falling dry skin, hair collected from the shower drain, my breath, and retinal images from a recent eye exam. They began from a desire to connect patterns in nature to the body’s detritus and from a sense of wonder at the beauty of the images of space we see from the Hubble Telescope and looking at the night sky. Sometimes they incorporate imagery sourced from funkadelic bands. George Clinton and William “Bootsy” Collins of the band Parliament re-imagined space travel with the Mothership Connection, a fantastical spaceship now in the Smithsonian Museum. Their otherworldly costumes and sets reference Star Trek, urban culture and stagecraft and imply flux, adaptation and impermanence.
